Carlisle

Carlisle has a great deal of history. It is the most besieged city in The United Kingdom and has been part of Scotland more than once. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in The Castle.  The Cathedral is well worth a visit as is Tullie House museum. Carlisle has plenty of shops but along with so many other towns, these are becoming more and more homogenized and very few independent shops remain.

Things to see and do in Carlisle

Carlisle Castle. Not much in the rooms but this is a very ancient building in remarkable repair.

The Border Regiment Museum  Situated in the old barracks inside the Castle. Some fascinating military history.

Carlisle Cathedral  One of the smaller Cathedrals in the country, built of red sandstone. Choral evensong every day at 5.30, 3.00pm on Sunday is lovely.

Tullie House Museum Award winning museum Has a great variety of exhibitions.

Ten Pin Bowling Perennial favourite for a wet afternoon or evening

Laser Quest A less painful version of paint balling where you only get zapped by a laser and it happens inside!

Paint Balling This seems to move around a bit, so please check that it is still there!

Aviation Museum at Carlisle Airport. Vulcan Bomber, Lightning and a mix of other vintage aircraft and static displays.

Walby Farm Park. An on-farm experience for children which is very popular.

Carlisle Farmers Market The first Friday of every month in the town centre. Local delicacies. Try the Haverigg Prison Smoked Sausages!

Houghton Hall- A World in miniature. The world’s third largest collection of miniatures from furniture to books.
